The Impact of Food Stockpiling

By now everyone knows that the government along with many companies have been stockpiling. Many have speculated as to the impact of this stockpiling, but it may not come as a surprise to you that all these predictions aren’t particularly positive.

Predictions

Mark Carney, the Governor of the Bank of England has warned that food prices may rise between 6 and 10% in the event of a ‘no-deal’ Brexit. While Kath Dalmeny, Policy Director of Sustain, has said:

“It has become clear that a ‘no deal’ Brexit has serious negative implications for our food system, the farmers and fishers who produce our food, the environment, and for food standards and cost. Other ‘deal’ scenarios may also be associated with rises in food prices and disruption to the continuity of supply.”

As Britain currently relies on daily deliveries and a constant food produce flow between Europe, overproduction and long-term storage will have a huge ripple effect on the industry, as well as there being a shortage of warehouse space currently available in the UK.

However, much of the consumer demand comes from fresh produce that can’t be stored long-term, and some products can’t be stockpiled due to there being no way to accelerate factors such as crop growth.
